SUMMARY:Nina Godenhjelm: Hands-on terminology in technical communications
DESCRIPTION:What does work on terminology entail for technical writers? How does or should it manifest at your job? \nTechnical pieces of writing are often full of specialized terms. This can include common terminology for the field but also terms which only apply to a company’s products. People may even have strong opinions over such terms. Can the processes of technical writing be applied to such work on terms? And if yes\, to what extent? \nTechnical writers’ work on terminology must be woven together with their other tasks. But the challenge is to find the time and to define the extent of terminology-related tasks. Here\, we will discuss the practical details that help get started and then proceed with such work: Which words are part of the terminology for your writing\, and which ones are not. How to select terms. Which sources to consult. What other resources and sources of aid exist. Which details on each term should you record. How to apply terms. And how to split your time to avoid turning proper terminology into an impossible to reach goal!

SUMMARY:Hanna Heinonen: From Terminology Silos to Reusable Knowledge Assets: Managing Terminology with DITA Glossaries
DESCRIPTION:Many organizations manage terminology across multiple disconnected systems. At KONE\, terminology was historically maintained in separate platforms including terminology management systems\, controlled language tools\, and translation environments. Keeping terminology aligned required updates in multiple places\, creating unnecessary maintenance effort and increasing the risk of inconsistencies. \nTo address this challenge\, KONE is adopting DITA glossaries as the authoritative source for terminology. Preferred terms\, synonyms\, deprecated terms\, definitions\, images\, and related metadata are maintained in structured glossary topics\, from which terminology can be reused across authoring\, localization\, and content delivery workflows. This approach reduces duplicate maintenance\, improves governance\, and establishes a sustainable single source of truth for terminology. \nThis webinar provides a practical introduction to DITA glossaries and how they can be used in a real-world content ecosystem. I will share KONE’s terminology journey\, discuss the move from multiple terminology repositories to DITA glossary topics\, and demonstrate how structured glossary content supports terminology management at scale. The session includes practical examples of DITA glossary topics and their structure\, including preferred terms\, synonyms\, deprecated terms\, definitions\, and images. We will also look at how glossary entries can be integrated into DITA-based content and how a single glossary entry can be reused across multiple publications and downstream systems. \nFinally\, I will discuss an unexpected benefit of structured terminology. Over time\, terminology databases capture valuable domain knowledge: approved terminology\, alternative expressions\, definitions\, and relationships between concepts. When managed as structured content\, glossary data becomes much more than a language resource. It becomes a reusable knowledge asset that can support search\, content delivery\, localization\, and emerging knowledge-driven applications.

SUMMARY:Maaret Henriksson: Building a business case for technical communication
DESCRIPTION:Wherever you sit in a technical communication organization — writing content\, leading a team\, or owning the strategy — you’ve probably had this experience: you know something needs to change (a new platform\, more headcount\, a different way of working)\, but when you ask for it\, the answer is ”show me the business case.” Building one is definitely not easy — it means combining many different factors: numbers that are easy to measure and ones that aren’t\, different stakeholders with different priorities\, and a story that has to hold up under scrutiny. Let’s picture together in the webinar 12.10. how to do this through few case examples.

SUMMARY:Tuula Silfver (Index IT): Epäjohdonmukaisesta Wordista hallittuun DITA-malliin: AI-konversio ja Oxygen AI Positron kirjoittajan tukena
DESCRIPTION:Kun Word-pohjainen tekninen dokumentaatio alkaa rajoittaa tekemistä\, on aika siirtyä tehokkaampaan malliin. Lisäksi standardi on toimittajariippumaton\, mikä varmistaa joustavuuden tulevaisuudessa. \nSuurin haaste siirtymässä on usein vanhan Word-aineiston muuntaminen rakenteiseen muotoon.
